SOUTHERN SHUNEH - HRH Princess Basma, president of the Jordanian Association of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, attended the 28th national girl guides and boy scouts assembly at the Karameh Martyrs Camp in Southern Shuneh this week.

Assembly activities, which conclude on Tuesday, included camps for 500 girl guides and boy scouts across Jordan, according to organisers.

The gathering, held in cooperation with the Education Ministry, seeks to contribute to promoting positive values among young people and enabling them to exercise teamwork, in addition to building bridges between old and new members.

Princess Basma toured the camp′s facilities and met with participants, stressing the importance of volunteerism and such meetings in developing students skills and values.

She listened to a briefing on achievements realised by the scout movement.

For his part, Education Minister Mohammad Thneibat underlined the ministry′s commitment to the development of the association and its programmes.

Higher Youth Council President Sami Majali said the council cooperates with the ministry to engage students in various activities through its 165 centres across Jordan.

The Boy Scouts movement was founded in Jordan in 1954 and became a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement in 1955. The Girl Guides movement started in 1938 and Jordan became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1978.
